Do It Yourself:
Bus schedules to/from Mindo are very specific. From Quito, the easiest way to reach Mindo is to take a bus from the Ofelia Bus Station in N Quito. Either grab a cab to Ofelia or take the MetroBus line. Once there, you can catch a Flor de Valle bus that will take you into the town of Mindo. Times for these Quito – Mindo buses are:
Mon – Fri: 8am, 9am, 4pm
Sat: 7:40am, 8:20am, 9:20am, 4pm
Sun: 7:40am, 8:20am, 9:20am, 1:45pm, 5pm
Alternatively, you can catch a more regular bus from the Carcelen Bus Station, also in N Quito. To reach this station, either grab a cab or take the EcoVia line to its final northern station, Rio Coca. From there, stay in the Rio Coca station and catch a bus that is heading to Carapungo via Eloy Alfaro (you’ll see the sign hanging in the area . This bus generally leaves every 40 minutes. Tell the assistant that you would like Estacion Carcelen and they will alert you as you arrive.
The buses from Carcelen towards Mindo (look for buses heading for Santo Domingo) will drop you off at the intersection of the main road and the smaller road leading down into Mindo town. This is called “La Y de Mindo”. Make sure you tell the assistant your destination when you board the bus so they will stop at La Y for you. From there, take a camioneta or taxi down into town for $3 total (or $1/person if the truck fills up with a bunch of unconnected travelers). There are generally taxis waiting here at La Y but, if not, just wait a minute or two for one to show up. The hike down into town would take about 1.5hrs and the road is narrow, winding, and not the safest for pedestrians.
Returning to Quito:
When you arrive in Mindo, check the bus departure schedules and make sure you’re back at the station in time to return to Quito. These buses from Mindo town to Quito will take you to Ofelia Bus Station. If you miss the last bus of the day heading back to Quito, you can grab a taxi back up to La Y de Mindo and wait on the side of the road to catch a bus heading back to Quito. These buses will take you to Carcelen Bus Station in Quito.
